Garibak Fm

Period:
Silurian

Age Interval:
Wenlock-Ludlow (Sgr), S4

Province:
North Tajik

Type Locality and Naming

It is identified by A. I. Menakoky and A. S. Shadchinev (Shadchinev, 1970).

Synonym: Garibak suite (Гарибакская свита)

Reference section:

Lithology and Thickness

Carbonaceous-clayey slates. It consists of dark gray sandy-clayey and carbonaceous-clayey slates containing layers of limestone, siliceous slates, chert, sandstones, and occasionally tabular bodies of basalts, trachybasalts, andesites. Its thickness is 500-700 m.

Lithology Pattern:
Clayey sandstone

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

The suite conformably overlies the upper Ludlow Khushikat Fm

Upper contact

It is conformably overlain by the carbonate rocks of the Pragian and Famennian stages.

Regional extent

It is widespread in the southern part of the Turkestan region in the Zeravshan River valley. In terms of stratigraphic position, composition, and thickness, it is similar to the above-described Pulgon suite.

Fossils

In the Garibak suite, numerous remains of Wenlock stage graptolites Cyrtograptus murchisoni (Carr.), Monograptus riccartonensis Lapw., M. flexilis Elles, etc., and Ludlow stage Neodiversograptus nilssoni (Lapw.), Monograptus scanicus Tullb., M. formosus Bouc., Saetograptus leintwardinensis Hopk., etc. are found.

Initially, the Garibak suite included (Shadchinev, 1970) rocks with faunal remains of the Monograptus testis and Neodiversograptus nilssoni zones. In this work, D. A. Starshinin's viewpoint is accepted, which expanded the volume of the Garibak suite, including deposits with Cyrtograptus murchisoni, Monograptus riccartonensis, M. flexilis. These last A. S. Shadchinev distinguished together with the deposits of Stomatograptus grandis in a separate Paldorak suite. According to A. I. Lavrushevich and others (1974), in the upper part of the Garibak suite, Monograptus formosus (Boucek) and Pristiograptus ultimus Perner were also found, indicating that the upper layers of the suite include the base of Pridoli.
